BIBLICAL FACTS

“Is this not the fast that I have chosen:  To loose the bonds of wickedness, To undo the heavy burdens, To let the oppressed go free, And that you break every yoke?

Spiritual SoldersIs it not to share your bread with the hungry, And that you bring to your house the poor who are cast out; When you see the naked, that you cover him, And not hide yourself from your own flesh?

Then you light shall break forth like the morning, your healing shall spring forth speedily, any your righteousness shall go before you; the glory of the Lord shall be your rear guard.

Then you shall call, and the Lord will answer; You shall cry, And He will say, ‘here I am.”  Isaiah 58:6-9

Three types of fasts.

The three day fast:  Esther 4:16.  Queen Esther asked the people to “fast for me, neither eat nor drink for three days, night or day:”  Esther’s people were in a time of crisis and she needed favor with the King in order to save her people.

The purpose of the three day fast is to seek favor in the time of crisis.

The twenty one day fast:  Daniel 10:2-3   “In those days, I Daniel, was mourning three full weeks. I ate no pleasant food, no meat or wine came into my mouth, nor did I anoint myself at all, till three whole weeks were fulfilled.”   A Daniel fast is one of vegetables, fruit and water.

The purpose of the twenty one day fast is to get clarity.  Daniel’s fast gave understanding of a vision.  God will give understanding of the vision He has given to you.

The one day fast:  Leviticus 23:27   “Also the tenth day of this seventh month shall be the Day of Atonement.   It shall be a holy convocation for you; you shall afflict your souls, and offer an offering made by the fire to the Lord.”

Jeremiah 36:6 says, “You go, therefore, and read from the scroll which you have written at my instruction, the words of the Lord in the hearing of the people in the Lord’s house on the day of fasting.  And you shall also read them in the hearing of all Judah who come from their cities.

The purpose of the one day fast is for self examination.  Set aside a day to fast and seek God.

Fasting is a time we set aside for ministering to the Lord; it not about us getting what we can get from God.  God will move when we fast, but it should be a time when our heart is crying out, I want to minister to You; I want to love You; I want to know You more; I want to draw closer to You; my heart cries out for You.
